When COVID-19 brought the world to a standstill in 2020, thousands of young people in and around Kampala, Uganda, dropped out of school with little hope or resources to return. Jonathan and Immaculate Kamyuka too were facing devastating effects of COVID experiencing food insecurity and nearly losing their home. But amid their own suffering, they could not ignore the growing number of vulnerable young people in slum communities facing a future with little opportunity, only perpetuating the cycle of poverty.
With backgrounds in education and social work, Jonathan and Immaculate envisioned a vocational school where young people could gain practical, employable skills at no cost. But their vision extended beyond employment. Having personally experienced various forms of trauma and other hardships as young people, they understood that skills alone could not transform a life - people needed healing, hope, purpose, and a foundation of faith in Christ.
It was a seemingly unlikely but God ordained connection made during a virtual gathering hosted by a U.S. church that became the catalyst for a miracle. Through this unexpected encounter, generous individuals after hearing the Life House vision, provided the resources necessary to make Life House Uganda a reality, opening the door for a mission that would transform countless young lives.
Life House was born from a desire to bring “life in abundance” to the next generation through vocational training, counseling, the gospel, and discipleship. Students will find a community and will discover their God-given potential, find freedom from past hardships, and envision a future filled with possibility. Through the remarkable dedication of Jonathan and Immaculate and their generous supporters, what began as a response to crisis has grown into a movement of transformation.
As of 2025, 3659 students had graduated from Life House; in January of 2027 1100 more will graduate. The program is supported by nearly 52 Ugandan employees, including social workers, vocational instructors, and program support staff. Jonathan and Immaculate’s vision is not simply to help young people survive today, but to help them have life in abundance, breaking the cycle of poverty, and creating a sustainable future for generations to come.
Life House wouldn't be able to operate without their team of educators, social workers, and support staff. Life House now operates in both Kibuli and Wakiso, allowing them to offer even more educational resources to young people in Uganda.
